Three Gorges Energy 60 MW/240 MWh Compressed Air Energy Storage VFD Project

Power & Energy | Compressed Air Energy Storage / Multistage Compressor Units | Combined Synchronous and Asynchronous Motor Drive Control + Soft Starting + Speed Control

Project Background

The Three Gorges Energy project for large-scale compressed air energy storage systems and key equipment R&D and demonstration includes the construction of a 60 MW/240 MWh clean compressed air energy storage demonstration power station. Its compression system uses compressor drive motors with different power ratings.

Project Challenges

  • The same compression system includes both electrically excited synchronous motors and asynchronous motors, requiring control of different motor types.
  • Motors No. 1 and No. 2 require variable-frequency soft starting followed by line-frequency operation. Motors No. 3 and No. 4 require both soft starting and variable-frequency speed control.
  • The wide range of motor power ratings requires coordinated bypass control and multi-motor drive logic.

Dayu Solution

A cascaded voltage-source VFD system provides system bypass control and combined drive control for synchronous and asynchronous motors. Depending on the requirements of each compressor unit, it supports either variable-frequency soft starting followed by line-frequency operation or variable-frequency speed control.

Key Configuration

  • Project scale: 60 MW/240 MWh compressed air energy storage demonstration power station.
  • Compressor motors: 28 MW and 24 MW synchronous motors; 8.5 MW and 7 MW asynchronous motors.
  • Configuration: GBT-MVSG series high-voltage variable-frequency soft starter.
  • Control: Combined synchronous and asynchronous motor drive control, system bypass, and soft starting or speed control as required.

Application Value

This project demonstrates the ability of a voltage-source high-voltage VFD system to accommodate different motor types and operating conditions in compressed air energy storage applications.
