Yingcheng Hubei 300 MW Compressed Air Energy Storage LCI VFD Project

Power & Energy | Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage / Two Trains with Multiple Compressor Units | LCI Variable-Frequency Starting + Speed Control / Two Drives for Eight Motors

Project Background

The 300 MW compressed air energy storage project in Yingcheng, Hubei uses an underground salt cavern for air storage. The compression section has two trains, each with multiple compressor units. The system must support repeated, successive, sequential starting of high-power compressor motors and speed control of the final-stage compressor on each train.

Project Challenges

  • The largest motor is rated at 52 MW, making this an ultra-high-power motor starting application.
  • The multiple units across the two trains require a multi-motor starting and speed-control system with two drives serving eight motors.
  • The system must support repeated, successive, rapid starting of individual motors each day, with the total starting time for all four stages kept within 180 seconds.

Dayu Solution

A GBT-LCI variable-frequency starting and speed-control system is installed on each compression train. Each VFD can start multiple units and meet the speed-control requirements of the fourth compressor unit on each train. System selection is based on the largest motor rating of 52 MW and the load characteristics, with an LCI output power of 25 MW.

Key Configuration

  • Project: 300 MW compressed air energy storage.
  • Compressor units: Multiple units on each of two trains; motor ratings of 52/43/43/20 MW.
  • System: LCI variable-frequency starting and speed-control equipment, with two drives serving eight motors.
  • Model: GBT-LCI high-voltage VFD.
  • Control objectives: Successive starting of multiple motors and speed control of the final-stage compressor.

Application Value

After commissioning, the motor starting times and performance across the two trains met or exceeded the design requirements. The LCI system played a critical role in starting multiple motors in an ultra-high-power compressor installation.
