Yumen Gansu 300 MW Compressed Air Energy Storage LCI VFD Project

Power & Energy | Artificial Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage / Two Trains with Six Synchronous-Motor-Driven Compressor Units | LCI Variable-Frequency Starting + Speed Control / Two Drives for Six Motors

Project Background

The 300 MW compressed air energy storage power station in Yumen, Jiuquan, Gansu uses an excavated underground cavern for air storage. The compression section has two trains, each with three synchronous-motor-driven compressor units. The motor ratings are 81 MW, 72 MW and 30 MW, respectively.

Project Challenges

  • The largest motor is rated at 81 MW, placing high demands on the capacity and control capability of the variable-frequency starting system.
  • The six synchronous motors across the two trains must share the variable-frequency starting equipment. Speed control is also required for the third compressor on each train.
  • The system must support repeated, successive, sequential starting, with the total starting time for all three stages kept within 180 seconds.

Dayu Solution

Each compression train has one LCI variable-frequency starting and speed-control unit, forming a system with two drives serving six motors. Each drive can start all six units and provide speed control for the third compressor unit on each train. System selection is based on the largest motor rating of 81 MW, with an LCI output power of 34 MW.

Key Configuration

  • Project: 300 MW compressed air energy storage power station.
  • Motors: 81 MW / 72 MW / 30 MW synchronous motors; six motors across two trains.
  • System: Two LCI units serving six motors.
  • Model: GBT-LCI high-voltage VFD.
  • LCI output power: 34 MW.

Application Value

The case highlights 81 MW-class synchronous motors and a multi-motor starting and speed-control configuration with two drives serving six motors.
