Tai'an Shandong 350 MW Compressed Air Energy Storage LCI VFD Project
Power & Energy | Salt Cavern Compressed Air Energy Storage / Two Trains with Eight Synchronous-Motor-Driven Compressor Units | Combined Current-Source and Voltage-Source Variable-Frequency Starting / Two Drives for Eight Motors
Project Background
The compression section of the 350 MW salt cavern compressed air energy storage project in Tai'an, Shandong has two trains. Each train has four synchronous-motor-driven compressor units, with motor ratings of 40 MW, 33 MW, 33 MW and 33 MW, respectively.
Project Challenges
- The eight synchronous motors across the two trains require successive multi-motor starting and speed control of the final-stage compressor.
- The system combines current-source and voltage-source VFD equipment, requiring coordination between the equipment and its control logic.
- The total starting time for all four compressor stages must be kept within 180 seconds. The system must also support repeated, successive, sequential starting each day.
Dayu Solution
The project uses multiple variable-frequency starting and speed-control units, primarily of current-source and voltage-source types, to form a multi-motor starting system with two drives serving eight motors. Each drive can start all eight units and meet the speed-control requirements of the fourth compressor unit on each train.
Key Configuration
- Project: 350 MW salt cavern compressed air energy storage.
- Motors: 40 MW + 3 × 33 MW per train; eight synchronous motors across two trains.
- System: Multiple variable-frequency starting and speed-control units of current-source and voltage-source types, with two drives serving eight motors.
Application Value
This 350 MW-class compressed air energy storage multi-motor starting case highlights the combination of current-source and voltage-source equipment and the capability of a system with two drives serving eight motors.
