WISCO 46 MW Blast Furnace Blower LCI Upgrade Project

Metallurgy & Steel | Blast Furnace Blower / 46 MW Synchronous Motor / Legacy System Upgrade | LCI Replacement and Upgrade + Interface Adaptation for the Existing Excitation System

Project Background

The project originally used a GL series current-source VFD cabinet to drive a 10 kV, 46 MW blower motor. The VFD had been in service for many years, and thyristor faults could cause the blower to fail to start. The original system also used established communication logic with the excitation equipment and central control system.

Project Challenges

  • Aging of the original imported VFD created reliability issues that directly affected blast furnace air supply.
  • The main motor is a large 46 MW synchronous motor, and the retrofit must retain the existing excitation system.
  • The original VFD and excitation cabinet use DP communication. Replacing the VFD requires adaptation of the communication protocol and control interfaces.

Dayu Solution

Dayu Electric supplied GBT-LCI current-source high-voltage VFD equipment and expanded the interfaces through the excitation system PLC. Commands from the original communication system were interpreted and integrated into the new VFD control, enabling coordination with the existing Siemens excitation system and central control logic.

Key Configuration

  • Main motor: 10 kV, 46 MW blower motor.
  • Original system: GL VFD and excitation system.
  • New equipment: GBT-LCI series high-voltage VFD.
  • Retrofit focus: DP communication, PLC interface expansion and compatibility with the existing excitation system.

Application Value

After commissioning, the upgraded system started successfully on the first attempt. The project demonstrates Dayu Electric's engineering capabilities in LCI upgrades for ultra-high-power synchronous motors, legacy-system interface adaptation and coordination with existing excitation systems.
